Byway Description


   The Byway begins on US 250 at Stock TR 313. The route continues west along the lake to the dam, crosses the dam on TR 280 and continues up the valley to CR 2. Harrison CR 55 begins at US 250 at the east end of Tappan Lake and merges with CR 2, continuing through Deersville and Feed Springs, becomes CR 36 at the Tuscarawas County line, and ends at SR 800. Another section of the byway begins at CR 21 in Deersville and proceeds south becoming SR 799 and ending at SR 800.
   The final portion of the byway includes SR 646 which begins at US 250 at Tappan Lake, proceeds through Scio and New Rumley to SR 9, then through Jewett to SR 151 and returns to Scio. The total distance for the Scenic Byway is 55 miles. 

 

Special Event

The Deersville Founders Day Festival was held on Saturday, August 12th.  The theme of the parade this year was "Pioneer Families."  Honored were families who have lived in Deersville and the surrounding area for several generations. Byway visitors and community members alike enjoyed this annual summer event.  Event photos below are compliments of Dick Zeimer.

Points of Interest
  • Deersville General Store, located off of CR2, has been in business for 99 years and is famous for its homemade ice cream.
  • Also in Deersville, is the Community Hall and Theatre.  Built in 1913 as a theatre for stage productions and a gathering place for the community.  
  • Faith Ranch, located in Jewett, sporting over 4200 acres, offers horseback riding, hay rides and authentic barn dances.
  • The Kammeyer Opera House, also of Jewett, was built in 1910 and restored in 1992.  
  • Tappan and Clendening Lakes 
  • The Scio Historical Museum, a vintage, yellow brick home on Main and Carrollton Streets in the center of the village is maintained and sponsored by the Scio Development Committee, Inc., a non-profit community improvement organization. The museum houses collections and memorabilia from the 1889 oil boom, Scio College, Scio Pottery, Scio High School, and Scio American Legion. A collection of first edition books on General George Custer is displayed along with other Custer pictures and various Civil War items. Upstairs rooms featuring vintage clothing, village flags, banners, and quilts recently have been opened.  The museum is open to the public at no charge on the fourth Sunday of each month from May to September. It also is open during the four day Fall Festival each August.   • Built in 1873, Ourant School is a one room school house which was renovated a few years ago, as a joint effort led by local residents and coordinated by Crossroads Resource Conservation and Development District.  Several events are held at the school annually, including a cake walk and a reunion. But the highlight of the year takes place in the spring, when each of the second grade classes from the various Harrison Hills elementary schools spends a day as students in a one room school house.  Ourant School is located on Route 328 in Nottingham Township, east of Deersville.       
  • "Old Moravian Trail Pizza and Baked Goods' shop which just opened at 220 W. Main St., Deersville in a restored 1830s home. They feature pizza, sub sandwiches, pasta dinners and baked goodies.
