Visitors
and residents alike are drawn to the Portsmouth Murals.
Located on the floodwall along Front Street, the 40 paintings
in this outdoor art gallery depict scenes from the city's
past. Subjects include Portsmouth's history, the town's
settlement, the growth of industry and famous personages, such
as Branch Rickey. The project will be completed by 2002, with

Clark
Planetarium
|
When
was the last time your toured the Solar System? Have you ever
witnessed the explosive death of a star or journeyed inside a
living cell? You can when you visit Shawnee State University's
Clark Planetarium!
Located inside the Advanced Technology Center, the Clark
Planetarium is a large room with 66 seats under a huge dome
projection screen. The key piece of equipment in the
planetarium is the Digistar II Projection System. Digistar II
is the only computer graphics planetarium projection system in
the world. The Clark Planetarium is one of only 50
planetariums in the world that utilizes a Digistar projector.
Not only does this system project a realistic view of the
nighttime sky; it can also project three-dimensional images of
buildings, spacecraft, and much more.

Rogers Hometown Memorabilia Exhibit

The
Roy Rogers Hometown Memorabilia Exhibit, housed in the
basement of the Portsmouth Post Office, gets a stamp of
approval from the fans of the famous singing cowboy. See
posters, magazines, albums and photographs related to the life
and times of this cowboy legend and Portsmouth native. To

Carter
Caves State Resort Park
|
There's
more to Carter Caves State Resort Park than appears on the
surface. You might first notice the 20 miles of wooded nature
trails, the 40-acre lake, a 9-hole golf course, horse stables,
tennis courts and 15 cottages. However, Carter Caves also has
more than 20 caverns to explore, such as Cascade Cave, X Cave

Boneyfiddle
Historic District

There's no better way to pass the time than reminiscing about
times past in Portsmouth's Boneyfiddle Historic District. It's
one of the city's oldest neighborhoods, with buildings dating
as far back as 1835. Browse among the area's many antique
stores, shops and galleries; appreciate the elegant
architecture or enjoy the palate-pleasing fare.

Shawnee
State Park & Forest
|
You'll
find plenty of room to roam at Shawnee State Park &
Forest, the largest state forest in Ohio. Fish, boat or swim
on one of the park's two lakes, enjoy a peaceful repast at
Picnic Point or practice putting on the 18-hole golf course.
Other activities include hiking and canoeing. Campers can
pitch a tent at more than 100 sites or rent a cabin. Call

Philip
Moore Jr. Stone House
|
You'll
find one of the oldest houses in Scioto County in West
Portsmouth. The Philip Moor Jr. Stone House was constructed in
1797 by Revolutionary War veteran Philip Moore Jr. Built in
the Pennsylvania Stone House style, the two-story
home--originally a meeting place for itinerant Methodist
ministers--is furnished with pioneer artifacts and is open for

Greenup
Lock & Dam
|
Let
the Lockmaster lead you on a tour and learn how an
electricity-generating dam works, or spend the day watching
the ships go by at Greenup Lock & Dam. This key point in
the Ohio River navigation channel has a special observation
area for watching boats and barges "lock through"

Indian
Burial Mounds
|
You'll
find the longest serpent effigy in the United States only a
short distance from Portsmouth. Located 36 miles northwest of
Portsmouth on Route 73 (near Locust Grove), Serpent Mound is
one of many sites in the area that allows you to reflect on
the ancient Indian presence in the region. Other sites include
Mound Park, the site of horseshoe-shaped burial grounds and
the Tremper Mound.
