Sites of Interest
  • One of the oldest cemeteries along the National Road is in Zanesville, the Greenwood Cemetery was built by the city in 1835.  Originally named 'City Cemetery' until 1885, numerous politicians and other well known local citizens have been buried here.  The stone-arch which serves as the entrance way to the grounds has been standing since 1887.

  • Secrest Auditorium in downtown Zanesville, a 1,806-seat facility that brings a continuing series of touring plays and concerts under the auspices of various civic groups. Ceramic tile adorning many of its floors and walls, including a large mural illustrating Zanesville's history, was produced by famous local tile manufacturer (now closed) Mosaic Tile.

  • Putnam Hill Park -Putnam Hill Park Overlook has a volleyball net, two basketball hoops, an oversized sliding board and play area. Best view of famous Y Bridge. Off Pine Street north of West Main Street (U.S. 40). 740/455-0609

  • Zane's Landing Park -Located at the west end of Market Street in downtown Zanesville. Features include the Bicentennial Monument, the Eternal Flame Monument, and a recreational trail for walking, running, biking and rollerblading. The Lorena Sternwheeler is docked at Zane's Landing Park and offers daily rides during the summer months. 740/455-0609

  • Dr. Increase Mathews House Museum-304 Woodlawn Avenue, Zanesville, OH 43701
    740/454-9500 -Built in 1805, it is the oldest house in Zanesville. Located in the Putnam Historic  District. Historic room settings, military room and Muskingum River history display, quilts, coverlets and gift shop. Admission: $2.00/person. Call for hours.  

  • Putnam Mansion 425 Woodlawn Ave., Zanesville, OH 43701, Private, still occupied home built in 1849 welcomes visitors on advance notice. Owners are noted for their extensive collections of authentic period clothing, antiques, toys and dolls.

  • Putnam Presbyterian Church 467 Woodlawn Ave., Zanesville, OH 43701, Dates to 1807, when a group of worshipers met in a tavern across the street form Dr. Increase Mathews' house. Was the center of Abolitionist activity during pre-Civil War years. Tours by appointment through the CVB

  • Stone Academy 115 Jefferson St., Zanesville, OH 43701, 740-454-9500, In the Putnam Historic District. Erected in 1809, its original purpose was to serve as the legislative seat for the newly created State of Ohio. Site of two conventions of the State Abolition Society

  • Y - Bridge - Downtown Zanesville - First built in 1814 to span the confluence of the Licking and Muskingum Rivers. Current bridge is the fifth construction at the same location. "Ripley's Believe It or Not" proclaimed it "the only bridge in the world which you can cross and still be on the same side of the river". At the intersections of Linden Avenue, West Main Street and Main Street (U.S. 40). Best viewing from Putnam Overlook, located off Pine Street.

  • Salt Creek Covered Bridge-(Johnson's Mill)-Arch Hill Road-3 miles east of Zanesville.  Completed in 1846, this 87-ft. bridge is the only remaining pure Warren truss covered bridge in the world. Pedestrian traffic only. Take US 40 E from Zanesville, turn left onto Arch Hill Road (at White Pillars Christmas House) and proceed a couple of miles.
