Heritage Corridors of Bath

Byway Description

Heritage Corridors of Bath encompasses all or parts of 12 roads within Bath Township, in Summit County.  It connects three 19th century hamlets and passes by numerous historic structures, including early cemeteries and historic mills.  The land is rolling and rural, and contains both the Bath Nature Preserve and portions of the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area.  Roads include portions of the following:  Revere, Medina Line, Cleveland-Massilon, Everett, Ira, Oak Hill, Martin, Bath, Yellow Creek, Granger, Hametown and Shade.   

 
Sites of Interest
  • Bath Nature Preserve consists of approximately 404 acres located at 4160 Ira Road.  This area has a diverse habitat and possesses some of the rarest fauna and flora in Ohio

  • Bath Hill Park and Trailhead South is located on North Revere Road, just east of the intersection of Olentangy Drive and North Revere Road  

  • Some 800 acres of the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area, a national park containing 33,000 acres total, are located within Bath

  • The route connects three 19th century hamlets of Ghent, Bath Center and Hammond's Corner

  • The Ghent Woolen Mill (3542 Granger Road in Bath, Ohio) was built in 1832 to process wool textiles for area farmers. At its peak, the mill processed 10,000 pounds of wool each year. Henry Pardee bought the mill around 1875 and became known for the "Hammerstein process" used to manufacture goods that were waterproof and resistant to heat and cold. In 1889, the mill was converted into a machine shop with living quarters.

  • The mission at Crown Point Ecology Center is to connect spirituality with the practical application of ecology. We strive to do this through the integration of sustainability, justice, spirituality, and community.  Crown Point is situated on a 130 acre farmstead in Bath, Ohio. The center includes a certified organic farm that supports a 60 family Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) project and the Akron/Canton Regional FoodBank.  At least 50% of the harvest is donated to the FoodBank and is shared with hungry families throughout an eight county area.  The farm serves as a learning center for area school children and summer day campers.  Programs are also offered for adults and families that include concerts, seasonal celebrations.  Crown Point Ecology Center, 3220 Ira Road, P.O.   • The University of Akron has entered a partnership with the township of Bath to develop a field station and maintain a nature preserve on a 400 acre tract of the old Firestone estate (formerly the country estate of tire magnate Raymond Firestone). The Bath Nature Preserve will maintain a mixture of natural habitats: grasslands, mesophytic deciduous forests, riparian forests, wetlands, peatlands, ponds, and streams encompassing the wide range of the habitat types found in Northeastern Ohio.
