Amish Country Byway

Byway Feature 

Holmes County has over 50 one-room school houses located directly on the byway.  The Boyd School, located northwest of Berlin on Fryburg-Fredericksburg Road, 6178 CR, Millersburg, US Route 62,is also featured in the National Register of Historic Places. 

Sites of Interest

While traveling the Amish Country Byway visitors can enjoy these museums and attractions which focus on the cultural, historic, and natural resources of the byway.  The museum's focus is denoted accordingly:  C=cultural; H=historic; N=natural.

  • Helping Hands Quilt Museum (C)  Mennonite owned and operated. On site museum depicts the history of quilt making.  Large selection of both new and antique quilts, fabric, stencils and quilting supplies. Amish quilters on site some days.
  • Civil War Museum at West Holmes High School (C, H) Large collection of history regalia, especially about the Civil War. Used by the high school students for research.
  • County Line Museum (C, H)
  • Victorian House and Museum (H)  (link to www.victorianhouse.org ) 28 antique filled rooms of Victorian splendor in Millersburg. Formerly built by the Brightmans for their large family of 8 children, the mansion has been restored in its original entirety.
  • Holmes Co. Historical Society (H)  (link to www.victorianhouse.org )  The Historical Society is located in the Victorian House and Museum.
  • Winesburg Historical Society (H)
  • Amish & Mennonite Heritage Center (C, H) (link to http://pages.sssnet.com/behalt/ ) A half hour tour of the stunning 265' mural-in-the-round entitled Behalt painted by the late international artist, Heinz Gaugel depicting the Amish-Mennonite history. There is a bookstore offering books in German and English text, as well as a gallery and gift shop.
  • German Culture Museum (C, H)  An early German/Swiss home site providing travelers with documentation about the culture and influence on the early settlers in the area.  Furniture and amenities depicting early Amish life.
  • Killbuck Valley Museum (C, H, N) (link to www.killbuckmuseum.org ) Fossils, geological displays, mastodon bones, artifacts, one room school, Civil War display, & zoology display.
  • Amish Library Museum (C, H)
  • Winesburg Carriage Museum (C) 1/2 mile off US 62. Handmade carts, buggies, wagons and carriages. Three story old-style barn, museum full of sleighs and guided tours. Admission. Small items like sleigh bells for sale. Horses and ponies for sale.
  • Rastetter's Woolen Mill (C, H) 2 miles west of Berlin on the south side of SR 39.  Established in 1840, Rastetter Woolen Mill is Holmes County's Oldest business. It is the ONLY WORKING MILL IN THE US. It specializes in custom rug weaving, woolen yard goods, coasters, table runners, slipper and gloves, and other gifts.
  • Yoder's Amish Home and Farm (C,H, N)  http://www.gpubs.com/oac/guide/yodershome.htm  116 acre Amish working farm. Many of the early Amish settlers were dependent on agriculture and earned their bread by the sweat of the brow. Byway visitors can witness the early traditional farming ways and tour two homes completely furnished in traditional Amish decor. Features Apple Butter Making and Butchering Days each fall. On site petting area, buggy and hay rides and crafts round out a visit to Yoder's Amish Home.
